Here at 7400 Woodlawn and Emmaus Table, we are repurposing sacred space for individual and collective growth and flourishing. There are many ways to be nourished: friendship, conversation, purpose, and opportunity for collaboration.
Kitchens are places where people connect in elemental ways. Connection around fire and a recipe make for the potential of sustenance and hope. The newly renovated Community Kitchen is living into its new mission.
Along with our partner, Community Loaves, we are conspiring in Baking Bread – Sharing it With Others – Expanding the Table of Welcome! Community Loaves discovered that pandemic-inspired home bakers could fill a gap in local food banks’ access to fresh baked bread. As a result, a volunteer bread baking brigade was founded during the pandemic and is providing 100’s of volunteers a way to practically respond to this need.

Raising the Dough
Currently, we continue to raise funds for supplies for baking class stations, including ingredients for baked goods to be shared with unhoused and food insecure neighbors. You may find the fund raising image below. All of our goals have been met, except for one. We still have a vision of raising enough funds for a deck oven, which will increase the bread baking capacity of our kitchen. We believe that when we are ready for it, the way forward to acquiring it will also arise. In the meantime, lots of delicious and nutritious bread and other baked goods are being baked and shared. And a community of care is growing at the same time. Thank you to bakers and generous donors.
Community Loaves bakers are here every week (sometimes multiple days a week) hosting baking parties, storing baked loaves in the freezer bank, and supplying even more bread for our neighbors through local food banks. In the Fall of 2023, we dedicated the kitchen and are offering baking opportunities, including youth classes and Emmaus Table Baking Church on the first Saturday of the month. All are welcome

“On days when the world feels broken and unfixable, I bake bread. I envision a lunchbox with a yummy CL loaf sandwich, lovingly prepared by a parent, sustaining a child in their important work of learning and growing. All of us together -- the baker, the donor, the parent, the child -- make the world a breader place.” ~ Cindy Shultz
